What was the point of the lab ?
- The purpose of performing this lab was to study the response of nerve cells to touch sensation or stimulus. This lab gave us the opportunity to dissect leeches virtually and identify their neuron sensitivity to various stimuli including feathers, probes, forceps and dyed oil. Moving forward in the lab we discover where the neuron cells are located in the leech, they're on the ganglia on the ventral side near the body wall. While observing the neuron sensitivity, we found out that the N neuron only responded to the forceps. The T neuron responded best to the probe, feather, and forceps. The P neuron responded to the probe only, and the R neuron did not respond to the stimuli, feather, probe, or forceps. The X neuron did not respond to any stimuli.
How is this applicable to people ?
- We used leeches because they have simple nervous systems that execute most of the similar standards as the complex nervous systems like ours. This in the future will help us understand how powerful the nervous system is. By using the leeches for our lab, we will now know facts about the systems and the brain.
